I do enjoy a good quiz show on television, particularly the ones like University Challenge or Mastermind.
Mastermind
Apologies for anyone who doesn’t know what these shows are, particularly if you live in another country. University Challenge does what it says on the tin, a contest between two universities with the winner going on to the next round. The same can be said for Mastermind except the contestants are all individuals competing against each other.
Only Connect
It brings me on to a quiz show called ‘Only Connect.’ Now, it is a quiz show between two teams of four people. That’s about as far as I can get to understand any of it. After the introductions of the members of both teams, the competition starts, but I just cannot fathom what on earth is going on.
Each To Their Own
I’m a firm believer in ‘each to their own’, after all, life would be really tedious if we were all the same. However, when it comes to the competitors of ‘Only Connect’, there seem to be characters taking part that can only be described as a little off-kilter. I think I’m being polite as if I wasn’t I would say some are totally bonkers!
Aliens
They have names that are not anywhere near what you would call normal. I know there’s nothing wrong with that, but I do wonder with television shows like this, are aliens are among us? I’ve been told that people enjoy the program because it is different, which I accept, but so is learning Latin and I don’t understand a word of that.
Watch For Yourself
I’ve included a video of one of the episodes that were shown earlier in 2019. I really would love to know what people think about the show. Have I got it wrong?
Bryntin
January 13, 2020Only Connect is a favourite in this house (it’s two teams of three by the way). Rather than a simple who/where/what facts memory test, there’s a bit more for the teams (and us at home) to work out. It revels in it’s deliberate nerdy obtuseness, using Egyptian Hieroglyphs for question categories for example. I love it, but then, I’m highly sympathetic to deliberate obtuseness and the eccentric nature for some reason.

January 13, 2020I wish I could appreciate it, Bryntin, but I just don’t have the same brain matter as these contestants. See, I even got how many are in each side wrong. π

January 13, 2020I’ve always been a little put off by just how difficult it is, but perhaps I suppose give it a go β all the contestants seem like really genuine, decent people.

January 13, 2020I find it too difficult, Terry. I agree the contestants are decent people, but they seem to have a lot of knowledge about strange things and there’s nothing wrong with that. That’s why I’ll never fully understand any of the questions.

January 13, 2020Gave it a go…watched half and that’s all I could take. All those colours…the weird woman guzzling what? Everyone talking as if they have marbles in their mouths. Not to mention I didn’t have a clue….

January 13, 2020Haha, at least you have it a go, Yeti, thank you π

January 14, 2020It feels so good even to et 2/3 questions right per episode of University Challenge. Don’t watch regulalry, but the ‘celebrity’ version seems slightly easier.

January 14, 2020I know that feeling, librepaley π
SueW
January 15, 2020I’ve watched it a couple of times, I understand the format but it’s one of those programs that goes way beyond my thought level! I prefer Eggheads, but I do like Victoria Coran-Mitchell and she’s so well suited to this program.

January 15, 2020Iβm with you on Eggheads, Sue. Thank you π

April 4, 2020Oh I’m hopeless at Only Connect, but at the same time have a real soft spot for it. I grew up having to watch Fifteen to One and not having a clue, so I’m kind of used to that – plus, it makes it all the sweeter when you do get something right! I like that it asks something different of you and also celebrates the nerdy, off-kilter characters rather than weed them out.

April 4, 2020Thank you, Jacob. You raise some valid points about celebrating nerdy characters. I recall watching 15 to 1 now you mention it. I did enjoy that. π
