Busy Busy Busy

By Posted on 70 Comments 2 min read

I’ve just realised that it’s nearly a couple of weeks since I last wrote a blog. My excuse is, I’ve been busy.

Busy, Busy, Busy

I’ve been busily beavering away at my family history website I run. Having a surname Jones keeps me busy too. It’s something I’ve been pursuing over twenty years now and along the way have made many new friends and acquainted myself with some long lost family. If you’ve never dipped your toe into the fun of family history and genealogy, I can recommend it. These days, with almost everything online it can help make things a lot easier than years ago when I was running back and forward to the National Library of Wales, searching through miles of microfilm looking for a Jones among a million other Joneses. No search and index then, just sheer eye-boggling searching.

Words

Meanwhile, my wife Debbie has been delving into the art of podcasting with her poetry. Now there’s another website that I set up for her, but she hasn’t added much to it of late. Anyway, back to her podcast and she had to make a short 90 second or so talk about a specific word you don’t like and add it to the ‘Word Bin’. The word she chose was, ‘Sprog!’ What a ghastly word indeed. It’s another name for a baby and if you’re wondering what the heck I’m talking about, I suggest you give it a listen. It actually gave me a chuckle.

So Cold

It’s gone bitter cold here today. Up to now, the weather has felt more Spring-like these past few weeks, but today, I’ve been using far too much wood than I would have liked to have used on the fire. Downstairs, because our house is upside down, living room upstairs, bedroom and lobby downstairs, (I know, it’s truly weird) I’ve fitted a couple of infrared heaters to the walls. They’re just flat panels that plugin and supposedly heat objects up similar to how the sun does yet use something like a third of the electricity of a conventional heater. I saw the National Trust had started installing them into some of their older properties to cut down on their running costs. As soon as I read that, I bought myself a couple.

Stay Safe

That’s about all for this blog now so I shall wish you a good day or night depending on where you are and above all stay safe. Meanwhile, I shall be hunting for my elusive Morgan Jones from Llanfihangel, Cardiganshire around 1770. If anyone spots him, please let me know. Thank you.
P.S. If you want to look at my Jones Website it’s here.

And here’s a link toThe Word Bin

    Great post, Trev…as always!
Loved to hear Debbie talking about the word Sprog and I so agree with her, it almost a derogatory term of describing a small human life. Well done Debbie

Can you let me have the details of the wall heaters please.

Yes, “sprog” is not very pretty! Good luck finding all the Jones’! I am a Smith and my search didn’t get very far!

Could any name be harder to track than Jones? Maybe Smith. Good luck with your search. If you’ve gotten as far back as 1770, I’d say you’re doing very well.

My wife has been doing our family history for a long time but I can’t imagine trying to do Jones in England. Sprog was really a great word. My son is going to use it in his blog soon, he liked it so much.

My maiden name was Jones! I imagine there are still distant relatives out there in the valley North of Neath and I gather there were roots in Maenclochog – I wonder if we are related somehow? Someone else in the distant family was doing some research but since my Aunt died I have lost touch with the Jones’s.

A cousin and I researched our family trees over a 12-year timeframe. Today I look at that Tree and concern I have today. The journey we travelled through. We stumbled on secrets long forgotten. We debated whether to skip some names and stories. I regret deeply we didn’t today. Moral to the information is: folk today will be outraged their privacy was breach. God forgive us ????

Trev, your Jones Family Website is quite impressive. There are also lots of Joneses in my native land Guyana, formerly British Guiana until 1966, descendants of British plantation owner(s) or managers. I found one record of a Richard Michael Jones from London who died in British Guiana around 1851. He’s connected in some way with Plantations Rome and Houston. I’ve noted that he’s not listed on your Person Index.

Thank you, Rosaliene, I appreciate your very kind words. As far as I know, none of my Jones ancestors ventured out of the UK. 🙂

Busy busy indeed. The family history must be fascinating. I’ve got 6 months of Ancestry, only probably 2 months left, and I’m not getting very far… at all!

Those infrared heaters sound like a good idea. I’ll have to investigate. I hope they keep you toasty! xx

    • Trev
      November 28, 2020

Thank you, Caz. The heaters are a little expensive to buy, but they are compensated for buy their cheaper running costs, maintenance free and long warranties. I’m very pleased with ours to date. ????

        November 28, 2020

A worthwhile investment then. Considering how cold I am, and how freezing my room is (gets zero sunlight and has the wind blowing down the fireplace chimney!) I could do with two. I might have one to sit on as well. Will go investigate.

        • Trev
          November 28, 2020

Well worth looking into, Caz as there are various types. They’re not like conventional heaters, infrared panels heat up the walls and objects and create far less dust too. ????

That is, after the Christmas holiday (Holy Days). It’s great to be reading your blog again! I always enjoy it! Good luck with the Jones’ 🙂
