I Bet We’ve All Done This

I bet we’ve all done this, spent ages trying to get rid of the sub titles off the TV. It happened to me last night. I have to say in my defence that I wasn’t concentrating 100% on what was going on. I had one eye on my laptop, one eye on the TV, half a brain in Facebook, half a brain in conversation with wifey an whatever intelligence was left was concentrating on drinking my mug of tea!

That’s when one of my eyes connected with the TV and arrrgghhh, sub-titles! I hate them! I know and appreciate that there are those that need the words spinning by at the bottom of the screen, but for me, it’s like trying to read a book that I’m not interested in.

Anyway, I made a grab for the handset and pointed it at the TV and pressed the little button to get rid of those pesky words. I was like John Wayne drawing his gun except nothing happened! Try again, pointing, pressing, pointing and pressing and beginning to show signs of anger!! I removed the cover off the handset took out the batteries and replaced them, still no good. Switched the TV off then on, still those words were there! Frustration was starting to get the better of me and I was thinking of shutting the TV down altogether and waiting till the morning when I could make a fresh start after a good rest.

Just then,  the penny dropped, the Eureka moment!! The guy on the TV was talking in Chinese, after all it was a program about China! The sub-titles had nothing to do with my handset or TV, they were put there by the program makers so that we could understand what was being said!! I felt proper silly, and I was. That’s when I thought I can’t be the only one who’s ever done this, I bet we’ve all done this!!

I'd love to hear from you

Brilliant – and just the sort of thing I’d have done! 🙂

Thank you Jude. I’m glad it’s not just me then. 🙂

The subtitles do become a bit maddening, the subtitles are put there just to raise our blood pressure, mainly. What gets me with these remote controls, so shoddily made, the little buttons wear out very rapidly when you’re frustrated. Pressing harder makes them wear out that much faster, people who build these things knowingly do that. The goal is driving the TV watchers completely mad. That is what I mainly just listen to public radio anymore.
