I Could Live On Porridge
I have this recurring nightmare where I’ve awoken in the morning and my wife informs me that we have no porridge! Every kitchen cupboard, the larder, the fridge and even the biscuit jar are empty. It’s awful and I wake in a cold sweat to realise that it was only a dream. I’m pleased to say there is plenty of porridge in the house.
It’s Tasty
I love porridge!! So much so that I could live on it every day for eternity. Well, until my demise. It’s tasty, supposedly good for you and has that unique yumminess about it. No wonder Goldilocks took the trouble to break into the three bears house and risk everything by munching on their bowls of breakfast goodness. She knew she was on to something good!
Breakfast
Breakfast is supposed to be the most important meal of the day. There was a time, when, for one reason or another, I would forgo such an important occasion. Mostly because I was working shifts, which as anyone who has spent their time earning a crust like this, knows, makes a complete twizzle of your digestive system. Add to that the total mess it makes of your body clock, it’s hardly a surprise I’d miss breakfast.
Add An Orange
Thankfully, those crazy days and nights of treadmilling are long behind me. Which means I can enjoy breakfast, every day and I do. Day after day, my bowl of porridge has become such a part of my daily routine, it would be like losing a big toe (through an accident with an axe) if I didn’t have it. That and my easy peel orange all washed down with a mug of tea. So why am I so enamoured with this tasty breakfast delight?
Live Longer
I think our bodies know when we’re eating healthy food and likewise when we’re eating unhealthy food. Porridge definitely falls into the healthy food compartment. It’s good for your heart and according to a U.S. study, people who eat it and other wholegrains, live longer! You can’t argue with that, can you? It’s also such a simple thing to make. Add some oats into a bowl, add milk or water, microwave for a few minutes and…….bing!!
Add More Fruit
You can add lots of other goodies to it such as blueberries or bananas. I think there’s a whole lot of fruit can be added, though I prefer mine as it is. Yoghurt is something else that you can dollop on top. Don’t add any sugar though, that’s very naughty. So there you have it. If you want to start your day well, start it with a bowl of porridge. You can thank me later.

August 13, 2018Thank you, Sue. I used to be similar, only liking Porridge in the winter, but then I got hooked so much that I love it anytime. 🙂

August 13, 2018We have oatmeal, which is almost the same as porridge, twice a week, with raisins, and sliced banana. Len calls it porridge.

August 13, 2018Yes, it’s more or less the same.

August 14, 2018I love porridge. It goes back to my early days as a cook at the Leeds General Infirmary. Making and tasting 50 gallons every kind of did the trick. I just like it made with water and a pinch of salt. No milk, sugar, fruit, just the oats and water. And it has to be proper oats. None of this quick cook stuff. My better half is obsessed with over-night oats (which is usually my last job of the day) and I’ve just started having a table-spoon of uncooked oats on my cornflakes. Fills you up no end.
