My Many Faces

Art is always something I’ve had an interest in. Particularly faces. Why portraits? I have no idea. Something to do with each face being unique and the personality captured by a talented artist. I can look at faces for hours on end. To some people, it might sound a little weird, but to me, it’s like looking at a wonderful vista.

I’ve Always Loved Drawing

Ever since I can remember, I would draw and draw and draw. There would be houses, fields, flowers, but I always enjoyed faces. The only lesson I enjoyed at school was art. I left school and like the majority of people, fell onto the treadmill, working as many hours as possible to keep a roof over our heads. The art got left behind, I was too tired, didn’t have time, there was always something else to be done, like drink beer (only joking). As the years passed by, I did find a little time to dabble in the creativeness of drawing. I tried watercolours, pastels, oils and acrylics, but I always came back to the humble pencil.

I Now Have The Time

The other thing about not drawing for years is you tend to lose the ability to do it. Like most things, the more you practice, the better you get. When I finally retired, the bonus was the amount of time I suddenly had. Even with jobs that needed attention around the house, there was still time to practice what I’ve always wanted to do. Draw!! (I sounded a little like Clint Eastwood then.) So, to recap, I now have the time to draw and after a little practice and self-discipline, I’m drawing. I knew I wanted to use pencils or pencil based crayons and on searching Google for suitable items, I came across a set of charcoal pencils.

I Still Have Work To Do

So it was, I was back enjoying myself, drawing and drawing what I love to draw, faces. My first attempts were not very good, after all, it had been a long time. Then my wife suggested I draw a semi-profile picture. Hence the Tom Jones picture. It’s nothing serious, just a sketch, but his hair, the colour of it, made it a good practice piece. I am very pleased with it and I did share it over on Facebook to some very nice comments. Hopefully, the drawing will continue and I’ll share them on here. Meantime, I have to get on with some decorating!

Here’s a website that introduces using charcoal pencils.

I am trying to keep sketching as much as I can. I admit that I didn’t draw for some time, but now I’m really enjoying it that I want to do as much as possible. Thank you Diane.

I expect Tom would be happy with that portrait, particularly as he’s 98 now. Obviously done from an older photograph.

Lol, Bryntin. I know he’s getting on, but I never thought he was that old. 🙂

Holy crap, you drew that? And you say that’s nothing ‘serious’, it’s ‘just’ a sketch?! Are you kidding, that’s incredible!!! x

Thank you once again, Caz. Yes, it’s only done as a sketch. Thank you very much for your kind words, but I’ve only used a couple of charcoal pencils and a putty eraser. 🙂

That’s really great. Would you ever sell or draw any from requests?

    • admin
      June 25, 2019

Thank you very much for your kind words. I only do the drawings for my own pleasure as and when I find the right mood and time to do them. I find that if I get a request for a specific drawing, it always goes wrong. Maybe one day, I might sit down and take it serious enough to want to sell them and do commissions. 🙂

A wonderful portrait. It made me look more closely at your own picture. When I pressed ‘Read more’ under the About me picture, I got a pop up advert. It could just be a peculiarity of my own computer, but if you have a moment, you might check that is working how you intended.
