Our Bubble Is A Yurt

We met for the weekend at a local Yurt! It has been nearly 5 months since we’ve seen our daughters and grandchildren.

Meeting Time

Like most families during this awful Corona Virus pandemic, isolation has meant we haven’t seen our children face to face in what seems a lifetime. We’ve done ‘FaceTime’ and ‘Zoom’, but it’s nothing like meeting in real life. So imagine our joy when restrictions were lifted and our eldest daughter and her family announced they had booked a Yurt for a weekend away and it was only a few miles from our house.

BBQ

We were both overjoyed at the news and if the truth is known, the excitement set off an itchy rash on my arm, although it could have been an insect bite. The kids were coming on Friday and would arrive around 2:00 pm. They had permission from the owner of the Yurt that we could meet there, providing social distant rules were adhered to and enjoy a BBQ together.

The Long Wait

Friday seemed to take forever to get here! Honestly, it was one of the longest weeks I’ve ever known, even longer than a week of working night shift back in the day, or should that be night. On arrival at Red Wood Valley, we made our way through the trees, down the steep footpath and onto the main area. After about 200 yards, there on the right, nestled between the bushes was what looked like a flying saucer with people sat outside. Could it be them? I can’t tell until we get a little closer. Then two young children start waving and shouting excitedly, yes, it’s them!

Damn Swing

For obvious reasons, we couldn’t hug and greet each other, but it didn’t matter, it was so nice to be able to see them after so long. My 5-year-old Grandson told me not to forget “social distancing, Dude!” Most of the afternoon was spent on the platform outside the yurt, chatting while the ladies cooked on the BBQ. I nearly got to break my neck on the swing hanging from the huge oak tree. I must remember I’m not 12 anymore! Everything was so nice about the afternoon, the weather, the setting, the family and indeed, the yurt.

Elan Valley

I’ve never been in a yurt before and only seen them in magazine adverts. I was surprised at how comfortable and warm they are. It’s like being inside a giant boob complete with the pointy bit on top. There’s even a small wood burner in the corner, well, it’s not the corner as the yurt is round, but you know what I mean. As with most reunions, this one passed way too quick. The following day we travelled up to the Elan Valley and finished it off with another unhealthy BBQ.

So Greatful

We parted our ways on Sunday, but it had been a fantastic couple of days that we are all so grateful for. Hopefully, life is easing up a little for everyone and there will be more opportunities for meeting loved ones soon. Stay safe everyone.

I have never heard of a yurt. So it’s a big round tent. So pleased you got to spend quality time with your family.

Yes, it’s a big round tent, Susie, but with a window and door and proper heating. More of a permanent fixture. Thank you, Susie 🙂

My family are coming over this weekend and camping in and around the cabin in the garden. Like you I have really missed seeing them and am like an over-excited kid! We used to live in Rhayader back in the 70’s and loved the Elan Valley.

Aww what an awesome weekend! I love that the kids were fully on board with the pandemic precautions so as to remind you about “social distancing, Dude”! I’ve likewise never been in a yurt before. They seem to be quite a new trend and I’ve only seen the odd pictures online. I’ve never known anyone that’s stayed in one so it’s interesting to read a little more of what they’re really like. Sounds quite nice actually, a good midway point between camping and a B&B, which then makes me wonder where glamping comes into it. Too many words. I’m glad you got to spend some time safely with your family. Hopefully you won’t have too long to wait before you can see them all again  ♥

That sounds like a wonderful visit! My children haven’t seen their grandparents in quite some time now. We did go to their houses about a month ago and visit with them from the front yard while they remained on the porch. And Zoom has been a gift for sure.
