Beetroot and Ham Sandwich

Hello, remember me? I kept threatening to write another blog and every time I tried, the Gremlins struck. The last time was some technical shizz about a server problem and overloading with something that was designed to stop it overloading! I know, way beyond my comprehension.

Anyway, or any road up as they say where I come from, I’ve had a very good summer and I hope all of you have had one too. One of the highlights of my year and I know this must seem silly, is the re-discovery of Beetroot. I’m not sure what happened, but I was nosing in my refrigerator the one day and noticed the jar stuck in the corner. It was as if it was calling to me, “Want me, want me, want me….” I was instantly hooked, my taste buds were like a pneumatic road drill, vibrating and jiving to the rhythm of the Beet excuse the pun.

So it was, I had to have a sandwich, there and then. A couple of slices of fresh ham, two pieces of lightly buttered bread and the wonderful Beetroot to finish off. This is heaven, it really is. I don’t know where my love for this vegetable came from, but I’m probably thinking of childhood summers. Maybe I just love the taste of it?

I’m not a big eater of sandwiches, come to think of it, I’m not a really big eater. As I’ve got older I’ve learned to eat sensibly, the 5 fruit and veg a day as my Doctor will say. I’m having trouble at the moment finding really good Oranges, but that might be a seasonal thing. In the meantime, I’m so happy to have re-discovered my true first love, Beetroot. Long live the Beetroot, oh and it’s so good to be back.

    I actually like juiced beets, but I’ve never tried them in a salad before.

    I thought it was only Australians who liked beetroot in sandwiches! And hamburgers, which causes shudders of horror elsewhere

      Beetroot is amazing, especially when you cook it yourself. English love beetroot.

    Once, when inspection was going on in our office, I ordered tea and sandwich for the officer. The sandwich was filled with beet. I didn’t know the officer had a morbid hatred for beet. His dislike reflected in the inspection report !

      Oh dear, it was a bad day at the office then Nathaswami? Perhaps next time you’ll find an officer that likes Beetroot.

      Thank you so much, Jo. I think I’ve only ever had them straight from a jar, never as fresh as just being boiled and peeled.

    Trev, I’m a real foreigner, I live way out back, the sunshine has to be piped in most of the time. Beet root, is that something familiar to Apple butter? Made with beets ground-up? It sounds very very nourishing and very tasty. I have eaten far more than my share of beets through out my 70+ years and I still like beets on occasion. There full of iron I do believe. Thank you for another enlightening post.

      Hi Leland, sorry I’ve taken so long to reply to you. I’m not really sure if the Beetroot is the same as the Apple. It must be a beet. They are red naturally when they are grown and after they are picked they get pickled and put in jars of vinegar after being boiled I believe. 🙂
