Star Wars?

By Posted on 11 Comments 2 min read

Am I the only person in this entire universe that hasn’t had any interest in Star Wars? Every where I turn, there’s a poster advertising midnight showings of the film, kids with green flashy torch things that are supposedly called light sabres! The shops are full of Star Wars merchandise, space ships, mugs, masks and all sorts of paraphenalia.

What’s a man to do when he feels so left out of it? I have tried to join in and see if I can at least enjoy some of it, but it just doesn’t appeal to me. No matter how I try, my attention span for it lasts all of 2 nano seconds. It’s the same with Dr Who, I will sit and watch it if it’s on TV, but I just cannot get myself to the level of excitement that I see others do.

Perhaps I’m just a boring old fart and it’s as simple as that. But then again, I’ll enjoy something and watch it over and over but I won’t see the same enthusiasm from those around me. I mean things like The Apprentice, I love all the real life back stabbing and dog eat dog that goes on. I know others enjoy it too, but it has nowhere near the global attraction of Star Wars.

I sat through what seemed 42 hours of a film tonight called Watchmen or Watchman. See, I’m not even sure of the title, yet it was there before me. I could not make top nor tail of this. There were people like Superman, another one that looked like a modern version Elephant Man and a Cat Woman creature, oh and some guy who was blue, see through and totally naked!! Again, I’m sure it’s a popular film with an awful lot of people, but I just don’t get it.

I’m not knocking Star Wars or any other sci-fi feature, it’s just that I don’t understand what the rest of the world are so excited about. I feel isolated, and that’s not nice. Surely, I cannot be the only person who doesn’t like Star Wars?

I'd love to hear from you

Hi, thank you for your post! I’m a self proclaimed non-sci-fi fan. I understand people’s excitement every time there is a new Star Wars movie though. I have my own interests that may be weird to other people. I’m also not a fan of the movie Hunger Games, and even dogs that almost all that I know are fond of. I just could not blend with them. But I don’t mind at all. I have this post on http://cessgonzaga.com/2013/07/07/it-feels-good-but-i-can-hardly-explain-why/, wherein I thought I was the only one in the world who has such habit, but it turned out there were others doing the same. At least you now know you’re not alone who do not like Star Wars.

Well it feels good to know I’m not alone. I shall have a look at your post. Thank you for writing.

I’m not a fan. I saw the first one (which I guess is actually the fourth one or something like that) when I was 8-9, collected a few of the trading cards, gave them to the neighbor boy after a year, and never looked back. My 15 year old daughter just discovered about a year ago that what she thought was called a “life saver” was actually called a “light saber.” So, I would say that she’s not much of a fan either. 🙂

Thank you for posting and I’m glad I’m not alone. There appear to be quite a few of us. May the force be with us or without us.

We need a whole buncha new myths & legends to replace the old ones, but Star Wars – simple and stupefying, by turns – ain’t one of them! Perhaps I’m just allergic to hype …

      I agree with you.

You are neither alone nor an old fart for not becoming totally immersed in those shows you listed. I have seen ALL the Star Wars movies (except the current one), but only after they came out on VHS (yeah I’m that old) or were being shown at a dollar theater. I don’t care if I see it in 3D or ND or SHT or whatever version is popular and cool right now. I’m not sad that I didn’t wait a year in line to get front row seats for the very first viewing and if anyone thinks I’d dress up as Princess Leia while under the auspices of Jabba The Hutt, well they’re smoking something. So sir, no you aren’t the only one who doesn’t ‘get’ the whole commercial debacle of Star Wars. I find it more repulsive that the marketing department for that film designed things so it would come out at Christmas. I doubt George Lucas needs more money, but then I’m not a multi-billionaire and maybe having another billion or so is what he asked Santa for. And. To me? The quality of each subsequent film after the original three (aside from the graphic design of the sets and the special effects) has deteriorated in the writing and substance (story) in my opinion. I doubt George Lucas nor any of the people working on those films care about that though. They’re too busy raking in the dough. I wonder if they ever heard the phrase “Familiarity Breeds Contempt”?

That is a very intelligent answer, Sir. I think you hit the nail on the head. Thanks for taking the time, I appreciate it and I’m glad I’m not the only one not to get wrapped up in all this commercial hype.

I love that you’re a silly old sod! 🙂 And that you’re following my blog (thank you for that). I was brought up on Star Wars and still have a soft spot for Harrison Ford. Perhaps that’s the answer? I mean, I wouldn’t expect you to have a soft spot for him 🙂 Sorry not to be more of a help. Merry Christmas to you!

Thank you for your comments, I love them! It’s a pleasure to follow your blog. I like Harrison Ford as an actor, it’s just that I don’t get all excited about the hype over Star Wars. Merry Christmas to you too, thank you.
