Synergy Soup

Synergy soup, or should I say soup with synergy. I know, you’re wondering what the heck I’m talking about. Well, I haven’t been feeling tip top these past couple of weeks, hence the lack of blog posts for which I apologise. However, I’ve noticed that these days when I’m not feeling too good the TV goes on which is not a good move in my book.

Don’t get me wrong, I think TV can be interesting to watch at times, after all, there are things we would never get to see or hear if it wasn’t for that screen attached to the wall. But, and this is what really gets to me, there is so much blandness and complete nonsense on there, and to make it worse, I have sat and watched it!!

An example is a program where four people each take turn to cook a meal in their own homes and are then scored by the other three on how well they thought the meal had turned out. It’s called something like ‘Come Eat With Me’ or similar. Anyway, as I settled down to the one episode I managed to sit through before rigamortis set in, there was a young lady who after finishing her meal was asked what she thought of it, without letting any of the other contestants know. Her reply was, ‘The soup had no synergy’.

What does that mean, the soup had no synergy? If she had said it was lacking in seasoning, taste, flavour or even cold, I could have understood, but lack of synergy? Maybe I’m getting older and just don’t understand the younger generation and their descriptions. If I were a young guy now and was on my first date with that young lady and she had said that about the soup, I think I would have gone home there and then! If the soup had no synergy then I’d hate to think what I’d be lacking in!!! It’s good to be back and moaning again.

Come Dine With Me

I'd love to hear from you

Synergy: ‘Combined effect of drugs, organs, etc. that exceeds the sum of their individual effects’.

Well according to the dictionary definition what she must have been saying was that she could taste all the individual ingredients, but she couldn’t taste the whole thing. What?!! She was obviously trying to sound very innovative (with her words) and clever. Everything has to be dramatic, or different, these days – heaven help us if we should be bored by a program. The trouble is that because of all the added drama, hype, and excessive enthusiasm the result, for me, is that it comes across as false and empty. A classic example is the common use of the word ‘awesome’ – which the Brits have adopted from the Americans. What IS possibly awesome are the number of people who now use the word to describe things that we might once have referred to as exciting, beautiful, or excellent! Not long ago a friend used it to describe a pair of pajamas given to her for her baby!

I like your reply, Jude. It does seem a different world these days, but then again, our Grandparents said the same thing. I would be totally confused if I made a soup and a guest said to me it had no synergy!! I wonder what the chef would think? Anyway, thank you for your ‘awesome’ reply. 😉
