Is Your Smart TV Spying On You?
You must have heard the fuss in the media this week with the leaking of secret documents by Wikileaks regarding smart TV’s. It’s alleged that our box in the corner or perhaps on the wall is spying on us. I think most people who own one have very little to worry about, but that’s not the point. It is an invasion of privacy and it’s being done without anyone knowing. You may as well invite a Policeman in to sit with you and let him take notes of everything you do and say.
What Is A Smart TV?
Put simply, a smart TV is fitted with ‘gubbins’ that can monitor the programmes you watch and at what time of day or night you watch for how long. It’s nothing new. The official term is ‘Data Collection.’ It’s not just the TV’s either. Smart fridges have been collecting information about what we eat, mobile phones can tell where we are or where we’ve been.
The newly leaked CIA files suggest something more sinister. Cameras and audio equipment being fitted to the TV so they spy not only on what you’re up to, but listen in as well! It’ll be handy for catching anyone planning a bank raid or cooking up a scheme to kidnap the neighbours cat.
Are You Worried?
I don’t like the idea. I can see situations arising similar to the photograph above. The smart TV is showing Laurel and Hardy and the old couple are fast asleep. Some top CIA agent peeks in through his monitor to be greeted by sounds of snoring! Sometimes though, the agents are going to come across a more amorous view of things. So, are you worried about smart TV’s?
I’d appreciate any thoughts you may have on smart TV’s as I’m surprised at the amount of paranoia here in the UK. Is it Big Brother coming home?
Here’s a consumer report by Which of the new TV’s.
